Getting Started with Google Tracking

Whether you're running Google Ads, using Google Analytics 4 (GA4), or simply want to understand how visitors interact with your event website, setting up Google Tracking correctly is essential.

Written by Angus Williams

The good news is that Eventrac supports a range of Google tracking options. The exact setup depends on how participants reach your event and whether you're using an Eventrac landing page, your own website, or both.

This guide will help you identify which setup applies to you and direct you to the appropriate step-by-step guide.

Before You Begin

Before configuring tracking within Eventrac, you'll need:

  • A Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property

  • A Google Tag Manager (GTM) container

If you haven't created these yet, we recommend completing this first within your Google account before continuing.

💡 New to Google Analytics?

Don't worry if you're unfamiliar with GA4 or Google Tag Manager. The guides below explain exactly what information you need from Google and where to enter it within Eventrac.

Step 1: Where Do Participants Start Their Journey?

Choose the scenario that best matches your setup.

Option 1: I Use Eventrac Landing Pages

If participants arrive directly on an Eventrac landing page before completing their booking, you'll first need to add your Google Tag Manager container to your Eventrac landing pages.

Once complete, continue to Step 2 below.

Option 2: I Have My Own Website

If participants first visit your own website before clicking through to Eventrac, you'll need to install Google Tag Manager on your website.

Once complete, continue to Step 2 below.

Option 3: I Use Both

Many organisers use both an Eventrac landing page and their own website.

In this case you'll need to complete both setup guides before moving on.

  • Add Google Tag Manager to your website.

  • Add Google Tag Manager to your Eventrac landing pages.

This ensures visitor activity can be tracked throughout the participant journey.

Step 2: Track Event Bookings

Once Google Tag Manager has been installed, the next step is to configure booking conversion tracking.

This allows Google Analytics 4 to record completed event registrations, helping you measure the effectiveness of your marketing activity.

Step 3: Are Participants Moving Between Different Domains?

If participants move between more than one website during the booking journey (for example, your own website and Eventrac), you'll also need to configure cross-domain tracking.

Without this, Google Analytics may treat the same visitor as two different users, resulting in inaccurate reporting.

I Have My Own Website and Eventrac

If visitors move from your website to Eventrac during the booking process, configure GA4 Cross-Domain Tracking.

I Use Eventrac Landing Pages

If you're using Eventrac Landing Pages alongside your own domain, you'll also need to configure cross-domain conversion tracking to ensure bookings are correctly attributed to your marketing campaigns.
